The Challenge

The evacuation of buildings in the event of fire or other emergency is an obstacle race against time. Unclear alarm sounds, confusing signs, or lack of direct access can cost precious minutes and impede rapid evacuation.

Design Process

User Journey Map
We started to approach this complicated scenario by breaking down the user journey into different phases (before, during & after evacuation), and map out key activities under each of the phase. Other factors such as anxiety level and potential interactions were also mapped out.

General Design Direction
We identified 4 main scenarios during the evacuation process based on the user journey map, product functions should be developed based on these scenarios

Design Thinking
The 4 main scenarios inspired us to think about "what makes evacuation intuitive?" and " what makes evacuation less anxious?"

Alarm Inactive

Eva is designed to blend in as much as possible when not in use

Alarm Activated

Eva activates itself when it detects evacuation conditions

Start Evacuation

Eva initiates evacuation signals by playing a voice message, followed by a tonal alarm

Directional Signals

Eva displays animations combined by directional sounds to give signals

SOS Activated

If the emergency exit is blocked, you're trapped, or you need help for any other reason, Eva can function as a S.O.S button

Help Is On The Way

Pressing the button communicates the exact location of the person in need directly to the already alerted first responders

Sound Design

Sound Design

Sound Patterns
Sound design is crucial in project EVA. We meticulously developed and refined sounds for four main scenarios. Each scenario features sounds specifically tailored to its unique situations, drawing from insights gathered during previous user journey mappings.

Spatial Sound
We also examined the placement of sounds within a space. We positioned sounds with various spatial adjustments, aiming to determine the optimal distance for each sound source.
